You probably do need a new one, but like most people you grown attached to it because it has everything you want you on it.  It's a pain in the butt to start from scratch, but sometimes you have to keep up with technology.  Businesses lose money when they're computer or server goes down, too slow to keep up with the work, it pays to maintain your computer such as upgrades, tune-ups, virus checks.  People come in all the time to shop or we go to their house and their computer is about 6-8 years old.  Some don't do much on it like surf the web and read emails, but they'd rather put $200 or more into the computer like a new hard drive then it put that money towards a new computer.  I always give my recommendation which applies to each time differently, but when it gets to a point that hardware upgrades and software cleanings won't make a difference in the speed of the computer then it's definitely time for a new computer.

know those free Antivirus's don't give your computer full protection? I refer to them as after-the-fact Antivirus’s; they usually find the virus after it has infected your computer. Don't get me wrong there are a lot of effective Anti-virus software, AVG, Avast, Avira, etc… , but nowadays I find that Malware is the nastiest form of a virus I've seen. I've seen ones that edit your host file, delete your host file, hide all your files making the user think they're all deleted, deleting windows files.

     People ask "how did I get it?" all the time, but it's hard to tell most of the time. Usually it comes through a downloaded file, possibly an email attachment, and I've had many attacks through ads on sites. Currently I have a free Antivirus and a paid for, full protection Malware blocker on my computer. My computer used to be unprotected because I felt I was immune to getting a virus. I knew what to do when it popped up. I had a link to a site that was a virus saved as a favorite on my old laptop and I used to demonstrate to customers how a virus would get on their computers. I stop it just in time as shown on the pictures below, but one must have slipped through the cracks. My computer and files are far too important to me to ever do that again, so now I just show them pictures.

     Most of these viruses will block your computer access to the internet as well as access to anything on the computer. Its goal is to cause destruction, take over your computer, steal your logins / passwords, and especially steal your credit card information. Some of the Malware removal software will actually delete the way of restoring the computer back to the way it was before the virus, so be very careful when trying to remove it yourself, you might end up spending more money and/or having to restore the computer back to factory settings.
